Archived reliably for the long term, stored for quick retrieval, or copied daily to be on the safe side: LRZ gives its users a wealth of practical options for storing and flexibly managing files on servers, fully automated tape libraries, and in on-prem storage solutions.
Experience tells us that research data yields greater insights, and that is why LRZ is also working with partner institutions to develop helpful services and tools that allow findings and results to be published professionally online and repeatedly analysed in this way. We support the international FAIR data principles, which ensure that research data is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.
Regularly secured
With our backup and archive service, you have the option of backing up the data that you have stored on computer workstations or servers in the Munich Scientific Network (MWN) during the day to the LRZ at night. With the help of these backups, any file can be restored if it has been destroyed or lost. In addition, the LRZ also enables universities to regularly back up documents from Microsoft 365 services, which are actually stored in the provider's cloud, to the LRZ. And we can archive all your data for at least ten years, or longer as required.
Storing data on the cloud
With the LRZ Cloud Storage (a “private cloud”), we operate highly available, scalable and secure storage systems in access-secured rooms, with which information within the MWN can be accessed worldwide by directly integrating it into the user's respective file system and/or using a web interface. LRZ guarantees data security using multi-factor authentication processes. We offer the Integrated Simple Archive or ISAR Cloud, a cloud archive with additional data backup on tape drives, for your long-term storage needs.
The data life cycle of large research data sets
The Data Science Storage (DSS) and the Data Science Archive (DSA) are specially designed for the huge data sets from science: Through the DSS, researchers can access large amounts of data, generated e.g. by calculations/simulations or measuring instruments, across the entire LRZ HPC and AI ecosystem and from anywhere in the world, share this information with colleagues and jointly evaluate it with high performance on the LRZ computing systems. After the evaluation phase, the data records can be archived in the DSA long-term and cost-efficiently, but can still be accessed worldwide at any time. Archived research data can be published online using specially developed tools.
Sharing files
With the service BayernShare - Sync+Share, you can store your data and documents conveniently, securely and reliably at the LRZ and keep them up to date (sync) and accessible worldwide on several devices (desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone) at the same time. You can also share and exchange (share) your data with other people worldwide and edit it on the go. BayernShare - Sync+Share simplifies cross-organizational, interdisciplinary and collaborative work.
Research data yields many insights. That is why it is important not only to document them securely but to organise and manage them carefully. Together with national and international research partners, LRZ develops helpful tools for research data management (RDM), for example, to make datasets searchable online with metadata.
The prototype of the portal, created in accordance with the globally applicable FAIR principles, makes it easy to find the results of scientific calculations and simulations stored at the LRZ and analyse them further.
