MWN-MAC

With the LRZ Client Lifecycle Management for Apple (MWN-MAC) we offer you a service for managed Apple workstations under macOS and iOS in the Munich Scientific Network (MWN). The LRZ provides you with tools to reduce the administrative work in life cycle management at your chair MACs to a minimum.

The service MWN-MAC addresses the topics user administration, software distribution, file services, printing, backup, security, monitoring and management delegation.

Scope of Services and Service Specifics

The following activities and services are associated with the MWN-MAC offer:

  • Directory integration into the MWN-ADS and thus easy use of all file, print and management services.
  • Identity Management (IDM): Integration of the customer's employee or user data into the LRZ user administration, if possible by connecting the LRZ user administration to IDM systems at the customer's site.
  • Provision: Fully automatic installation of a new or existing client with currently supported operating system version.
    • Volume Purchase Program (VPP) for simplified app distribution.
    • Device Enrollment Program (DEP) for minimum effort for new devices.
  • Application software: Initial installation and provision of patches and updates by the LRZ. The LRZ provides software and its updates in self-service. Users can install them themselves.
  • Special software: The packaging and distribution of special applications is possible and is carried out, if necessary, with cost-based billing according to hourly and daily rates.
  • License management is possible for programs and apps.
  • Optional file services: Standard LRZ file services (cloud storage of the Premium class) for use as individualized home directories or as storage systems for project work with fine-grained access rights control.
  • Printing under macOS: Integration of your network printers into the print server and/or connection to the client with automated driver installation. Optional: a service for print cost accounting is available.
  • Security: Integration of the MAC workstations in management concepts for the automated distribution of patches and updating of anti-virus software. If desired, hard disks can also be centrally controlled and encrypted via FileVault.
  • Management Delegation: Activities in the Active Directory for the management of the customer infrastructure, from object management to configuration profiles, can be carried out by you with delegated rights in your own responsibility.
  • Instruction of the on-site support.

The service-specific guidelines for the use of the Munich Scientific Network and the MWN-MAC service must be followed.

Terms of use

The customer provides on-site support capacity, i.e. 1st level support for end users and two contact persons (including representation) as interface to the LRZ service managers.

Duty of cooperation of the customer

MWN-MAC: the on-site customer support is responsible for the support of managed Apple devices in the areas

  • Software installation and update
  • Error analysis and correction (1st level support)
  • Customer service
  • Grouping of users and, if necessary, assignment of access rights for end users
  • Support of e.g. filing systems for project work with fine-grained rights assignment

The correct licensing of the client systems is the sole responsibility of the client.

In case of violation of the duty of care the LRZ reserves the right to remove computer accounts from the domain.

Minimum number of clients

The minimum number of managed clients to set up a organisational unit is 50.

Existing customers are free of this minimum number.

This service is made available to user classes 1, 2 and 3. The following fees are to be paid by the individual user classes:

Fees

Service usage is charged according to the applicable fee rates (prices per year and Apple device, excluding licence costs). Initial project expenses may be invoiced on a time and material basis after approval by the customer organisation.
