The service comprises the provision of DNS content on a highly redundant network of name servers, which is based on several physical machines in the Munich scientific network and a system at a hosting partner in the scientific environment (currently: fccn.pt, in the Portuguese research network and censer.cz in the Czech research network), thus ensuring a very high availability and reliability of the service.
The provision of the zone content can be done in two ways.
a) The user gets access to a web-based administration system ("LRZ WebDNS"), in which the contents of the assigned zones can be managed. A valid LRZ user ID is required for access. The system is only accessible from the Munich scientific network, VPN is required for access from external institutions.
b) The user provides the zone information on his own name server (Hidden Primary), the name servers of the LRZ replicate the zone contents at regular intervals or upon notification (DNS NOTIFY) and make them available for external queries.
