Research and work at LRZ

New technologies and research projects mean that the LRZ’s remit are constantly growing: In addition to IT specialists, we are therefore looking for university graduates from a wide range of disciplines who want to take science and projects to the next level.

Curiosity and a thirst for knowledge are strong driving forces for LRZ and its employees: We conduct basic research and participate in international projects to explore new technologies and accelerate scientific discovery. IT specialists can expect to work on challenging projects and expand their knowledge using a variety of technologies.

In turn, university graduates with experience of the IT sector support the work of research groups on our computer resources. LRZ also provides students specialising in computer science, system architecture or data science with the opportunity to work on their own projects, theses or doctoral degrees.

Gain in-depth knowledge: Your prospects at LRZ

Dealing with new technologies

IT specialists benefit from a technically diverse range of responsibilities at LRZ: They use new technologies and tools to develop IT services for science. The LRZ supports their development with qualifications, such as certificates.

Getting into IT practice

Students gain their first professional insights as assistants working at the service desk or in various LRZ departments, for example by advising users, operating technical resources or visualising data.

Studying alongside work

Work at LRZ and study at the same time? This is a challenge that the Computing Centre is happy to encourage and actively support female colleagues. LRZ employees also supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in collaboration with Munich and Bavarian universities.

Explore IT as part of your doctoral thesis

Whether it’s new hardware, software, security strategies, processes or visualisation techniques: At the LRZ, graduates from IT-related disciplines in particular will encounter a wide range of opportunities to develop their own research topics for doctoral theses. These are supervised at LRZ in collaboration with the universities.

Doctoral studies at LRZ

In its capacity as IT service provider and digitalisation and research partner – LRZ has plenty to offer female scientists who want to work more intensively on supercomputing, IT security and management or innovative research methods after completing their Master’s degree. The LRZ Board of Directors and the LRZ Advisory Board are made up of professors and those with a professorship, and LRZ employees are also active as lecturers at universities. Doctoral students will therefore find themselves immersed in a lively scientific community at the LRZ, which provides constructive and critical support for their research work.

FAQs on working and researching at LRZ

  • Yes, we need students to assist the service desk and various other departments. The prerequisite is that assistants are enrolled at a university. Many of our student employees stay with us for a long time, and some even start their careers here. The Future Computing internship is often the start of a research project with and about computer resources at LRZ. As many of our colleagues teach at universities in Munich and Bavaria, many topics for Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral theses are written here.

  • Yes, and some of our colleagues have already done so successfully. You can also study for a doctorate at LRZ. We can be flexible when it comes to organising your study and working hours thanks to electronic time recording, and many candidates accrue overtime or save up their annual leave for exam periods. Colleagues provide professional support and will cover some of your work during stressful periods. As the LRZ’s computer systems are also objects of research and we therefore cooperate with many universities and research institutes, there is a wealth of topics and opportunities for final or doctoral theses in coordination with universities.
