LRZ beteiligt sich am World IPv6 Day

Das Leibniz-Rechenzentrum betreibt bereits seit 2005 ein IPv6-fähiges Netz (http://www.lrz.de/services/netz/ipv6/) und hat umfassende Erfahrungen beim Betrieb der nächsten Generation des IP-Protokolls gesammelt.

Am 8. Juni 2011 findet unter der Schirmherrschaft der Internet Society (ISOC) ein 24-stündiger Testbetrieb des neuen Internetprotokolls IPv6 statt (http://isoc.org/wp/worldipv6day/). An diesem Tag werden große Anbieter von Webinhalten wie Google, Yahoo, Facebook und das weltgrößte Content-Delivery-Network (CDN) Akamai, aber auch Provider wie T-Online und viele andere auch über IPv6 erreichbar sein. Das LRZ beteiligt sich mit seinen Diensten und dem Münchner Wissenschaftsnetz am IPv6 World Day. Das Ziel dieses Testtags ist es, die Netzstruktur einem Lasttest zu unterziehen und Fehler bei der IPv6-Konfiguration von Clientrechnern zu finden, die eine Verbindung zu IPv6-fähigen Webseiten verhindern oder stark verzögern.

Da viele Webserver im Münchner Wissenschaftsnetz bereits seit Jahren mit IPv6 aktiv sind und auch Zugriffe aus dem MWN auf Google seit 2009 über IPv6 erfolgen können, erwarten wir keine bisher unentdeckt gebliebenen Störungen. Dennoch können diese aufgrund der heterogenen Struktur des MWN nicht völlig ausgeschlossen werden.

Sie können gerne auch vor dem 8. Juni Ihre IPv6-Verbindung testen, indem Sie auf Testseiten wie http://test-ipv6.com, http://ipv6eyechart.ripe.net/ oder http://ipv6-test.com zugreifen. Auch Zugriffsschwierigkeiten auf bereits IPv6-fähige Webseiten wie Google und den Heise-Newsticker können auf Probleme hinweisen.

Sollten die Tests ergeben, dass Sie keine IPv6-fähige Internetverbindung haben, so müssen Sie keine Aktionen durchführen. Ihr Internetzugang wird an diesem Tag wie gehabt weiter über das IPv4 Protokoll funktionieren.

Sollten Sie am 8.Juni beim Zugriff auf viele Webseiten Probleme haben, so könnte dies auf ein IPv6-Problem hinweisen. Bitte melden Sie sich in diesem Fall als Nutzer der TU-München beim IT-Support, ansonsten beim LRZ Servicedesk. Unter Umständen kann es hilfreich sein, die unter Windows automatisch aktivierten Migrationstechnologien Teredo und 6to4 zu deaktivieren (http://www.lrz.de/fragen/faq/netz/netz38/).

Fortran standardization committee meets at LRZ

The 195th meeting of the Fortran standardization committee (WG5/J3) will take place at the LRZ from June 27, 2011 to July 1, 2011. Some of the topics that will be worked on are

  • completion of the technical work on TR29113, a Technical Report which extends the existing Fortran 2008 standard by adding more features to Interoperability of Fortran with the C language
  • discussion of additional coarray features, to improve on the parallel functionality defined in Fortran 2008

Since this is a public event, observers are welcome. However, the number of seats in the conference room is limited. Upgrade von Sophos Clients im MWN auf die Version 9.7

Seit dem 02.06.2011 findet ein automatischer Upgrade der Sophos-Clients im MWN auf die Version 9.7 statt. Der Upgrade erfolgt automatisch, es sind vom Benutzer keine Eingriffe notwendig. Bei Netzanbindungen mit geringer Bandbreite kann der Updateprozess mehrere Minuten dauern.

Upgrade der Sophos Enterprise Console auf die Version 4.7 am LRZ

Ab dem 2.06.2011 steht die neue Sophos Enterprise Console 4.7 fuer CID-Betreiber im MWN zum Download bereit. Die Haupt-CID am LRZ wird zum 2.06.2011 auf die Version 4.7 umgestellt. SUB-CID Bertreiber im MWN koennen dann auch ihre CID auf die aktuellste Version 4.7 heben. Die Quellen fuer die aktuelle Sophos Enterprise Console 4.7 koennen dann ab dem 2.06.2011 wieder vom folgendem Link heruntergeladen werden:

Am Donnerstag, dem 30.06.2011, 10-13 Uhr, ist die Firma CADFEM, unser ANSYS Vertragspartner, am LRZ zu Gast. Sie als Benutzer von ANSYS sind dazu herzlich eingeladen, sich einen Überlick zu verschaffen, Probleme und Fragen anzusprechen und haben auch die Möglichkeit, Kontakte zu anderen Benutzern mit ähnlichen (inhaltlichen) Forschungsgebieten herzustellen.

Joint European DCI Summer School 2011

The summer school will give insights into the distributed computing technologies provided by the European Middleware Initiative, the
Initiative for Globus in Europe, the European Desktop Grid Initiative and StratusLab. Based on the experience of DEGISCO and the European Grid Infrastructure, the school will also address organization, application porting, and user support in production infrastructures based on these technologies.

Gründung des European Globus Community Forum erfolgt

Am 19. Mai 2011 wurde auf einer Vollversammlung des European Globus Community Forum (EGCF) am LRZ dessen offizielle Gründung verkündet. Das EGCF ist die offizielle Gemeinschaft der europäischen Globus Anwender und Entwickler. Als Sprecher des EGCF wurde einstimmig der österreichische Grid Experte Michael Krieger gewählt.

IGE Software 1.0.0 released

Compact course: Iterative linear solvers and parallelization

Date: Monday, September 12 - Friday, September 16, 2011, 8:30-17:30

Location: LRZ Building, Garching/Munich, Boltzmannstr. 1

Contents: The focus of this compact course is on iterative and parallel solvers, the parallel programming models MPI and OpenMP, and the parallel middleware PETSc. Different modern Krylov Subspace Methods (CG, GMRES, BiCGSTAB...) as well as highly efficient preconditioning techniques are presented in the context of real life applications. Hands-on sessions (in C and Fortran) will allow users to immediately test and understand the basic constructs of iterative solvers, the Message Passing Interface (MPI) and the shared memory directives of OpenMP.

This course is organized by the University of Kassel, the high performance computing centre of Stuttgart (HLRS) and IAG.

DEISA European-US Summer School on HPC Challenges

DEISA, Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications, has just announced the second EU/US summer school in computational sciences, to take place from Aug 7-12 at Lake Tahoe, California.

Participation/stay is free of charge, travel funds will be provided by DEISA/PRACE.

The NSF grant is aiming for 60 students, 35 from the US and 25 from Europe (just inverse to the summer school 2010 in Catania).

Applications are all through the US web page. The EU selection will be done by a committee already set up by DEISA and PRACE from six countries.

PRACE-Calls: Third Regular Call, Synchronized DECI Call, Preparatory Access Call

The Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) allows researchers from across Europe to apply for time on high-performance computers from a series of hosting nations via a central peer review process.

Calls for proposals for computer time on PRACE machines are issued regularly on the Prace Website http://www.prace-ri.eu/Calls-for-Proposals .

Third Regular Call for Tier-0 and synchronized Pilot Call for Tier-1 (DECI)

Tier-0 machines available in the Third Regular Call:

  • IBM Blue Gene/P "JUGENE"(GCS@Jülich, Germany)
  • BULL Bullx cluster "CURIE" (GENCI@CEA, France)
  • Cray XE6 "HERMIT" (GCS@HLRS, Germany).

Tier-1 HPC systems available in the Pilot DECI-Call from:
Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, and UK.
(DECI stands for "Distributed European Computing Initiative")

The call for Tier-0 and Tier-1 is currently open and will close on June 22nd, 2011, 16:00 CEST.

Successful projects will start  November 1st, 2011 and will run until  October 31st, 2012.

The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (Leibniz-Rechenzentrum, LRZ) is part of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, BADW). LRZ has been an active player in the area of high performance computing for over 20 years and provides computing power on several different levels. It offers its services to universities across Europe and to publicly funded research institutions, like Max-Planck and Helmholtz Institutes. In 2012, LRZ will put into service the fastest supercomputer in Europe (SuperMUC) with a peak performance of 3 Petaflop/s and more than 320 Terabyte of main memory.

In the field of High Performance Computing the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching (Munich) is looking for

a scientific staff member (university post graduate degree; master’s degree or equivalent) 

The position is available immediately. Applications will be accepted until June 30th, 2011.

You will contribute to European HPC research projects and will be working in this multifaceted field on a variety of system administration and operation related tasks aimed at achieving long-lasting results. In particular, you will take responsibility for some of the following tasks:

  • conceptual work on the installation and operation of a large HPC cluster
  • scouting new technologies and development, focusing on system management of large compute clusters
  • administering and monitoring cluster resources, installation of system software and configuration management
  • installation of system software
  • completing reports and documentation (primarily in English)
  • supporting users executing HPC projects
  • programming in Python, Perl, shell scripting

You should have the following qualifications:

  • a post graduate university degree in a scientifically oriented subject (computer science, mathematics, physics, etc.) with an above average GPA
  • experience with the system administration of UNIX/Linux based systems
  • programming knowledge with shell and scripting languages (Perl, Python, etc.) and a high level programming language (C, C++, or Java)
  • good speaking and writing skills in English a basic knowledge of the German language
  •  initiative, capacity for teamwork, and creativity.

Due to its state-of-the-art computing facilities and its proximity to the Munich universities, LRZ offers a very stimulating and innovative environment. Progressive policies such as flexible working hours support the combination of work and family life.

We offer you a pleasant and easygoing work environment in an internationally recognized HPC team with many years of experience that you can draw on for support, while also having ample opportunity to work independently and follow your individual preferences. LRZ is collaborating closely with other European and internationally renowned supercomputing centres and industrial technology providers on researching new technologies for the hardware and software design of future supercomputers. Within these research projects, energy efficiency of future supercomputers is a key aspect of LRZ’s research. This research covers both, the supercomputer systems themselves as well as the surrounding infrastructure for cooling, etc.

You will contribute to European HPC research projects and will be working in this multifaceted field on a variety of hardware and system software related research and with the potential to influence the future design of supercomputers worldwide. You will be working at the boundaries between computer science, physics, electrical engineering, and engineering of HVAC technology. In particular, you will take responsibility for some of the following tasks:

  • Conceptual design of energy efficient supercomputers and HPC centres
  • Design and implementation of energy monitoring software and databases for future HPC hardware
  • Design and implementation of energy aware operation software
  • Completing reports and documentation (primarily in English)
  • Programming in C/C++ and shell scripting

You should have the following qualifications:

  • a post graduate university degree in one of the relevant subjects (computer science, physics, electrical engineering, mathematics, etc.) with an above average GPA

Stellenangebot Geant3 (GN3) Netzmanagement

Im Rahmen des europäischen Forschungsprojektes "Multi-Gigabit European Research and Education Network and Associated Services (GN3)" wird eine innovative, hybride und pan-europäische Ultra-Hochgeschwindigkeits-Netzinfrastruktur aufgebaut. Das Geant-Netz verbindet nationale Forschungsnetze (National Research and Education Networks; NRENs) zu einem europäischen Wissenschaftsnetz, das den Endnutzern und deren Organisationen flexible, skalierbare und hochwertige Dienste anbietet. Die nationalen NRENS betreiben als autonome Organisationen ihre nationalen Forschungsnetze auf Basis verschiedener und heterogener Technologien. Ein Dienst, der mit Hilfe von Geant angeboten wird, sind paneuropäische, Hochgeschwindigkeits-OPNs (Optical Private Networks). Damit ist es möglich, europäische Forschungsstandorte mit optischen VPNs mit derzeit bis zu 10 Gbit/s miteinander zu verbinden.

Das Leibniz-Rechenzentrum arbeitet im Auftrag des Deutschen Forschungsnetzes (DFN) an Netz-Management-Fragestellungen des GN3-Projektes mit und sucht hierfür

eine(n) wissenschaftliche(n) Mitarbeiter(in).

Sie arbeiten in diesem Projekt in einem jungen, engagierten LRZ-Team und in sehr enger Zusammenarbeit mit den europäischen Projektpartnern.  Hierbei werden Sie insbesondere Werkzeuge für die Unterstützung von Domänen-übergreifenden Workflows zur Bereitstellung und den Betrieb von Multi-Domain Services konzipieren und entwickeln. Ihr Aufgabengebiet umfasst die Mitarbeit in zwei Teilprojekten:

  • E2E-Mon: Im Vorgängerprojekt GN2 wurde vom LRZ ein Monitoring-System zur Ende-zu-Ende Überwachung von grenzüberschreitenden optischen Datenstrecken entwickelt, dasbereits im Betrieb des Geant-Netzes eingesetzt wird. Im Rahmen von GN3 soll eine Umstellung dieses Systems auf ein neues, PHP-basiertes Web-Application-Framework konzipiert und E2E-Mon dadurch weiterentwickelt und verbessert werden.
  • iSHARe: Ebenfalls wurde in GN2 ein Domänen-übergreifendes Informationsmodell zum Austausch von Managementinformationen spezifiziert und ein Prototyp zum Austausch dieser Informationen implementiert. Dieser Prototyp befindet sich am Ende der Pilotphase und soll in den Produktivbetrieb überführt werden. Dabei ist die kontinuierliche Weiterentwicklung der Anwendung, v.a. deren Spezifikation und Modellierung, Ihre Aufgabe.

Ihr Aufgabenfeld umfasst insbesondere:

  • Abstimmen von Anforderungen an die Management-Systeme in Zusammenarbeit mit den Projektpartnern und Anwendern.
  • Erarbeiten von Spezifikationen und Projekt-Deliverables
  • Implementierung von neuen bzw. Weiterentwicklung von existierenden Management-Systemen
  • Unterstützung von Anwendern

Unsere Anforderungen sind:

  • Erfolgreich abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium in Informatik
  • Team- und Kommunikationsfähigkeit
  • Fähigkeit zu selbständigem und wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten
  • Freude und Interesse an Management und neuesten Netztechnologien
  • Gute Englischkenntnisse
  • Programmiererfahrung, insbesondere in Java, Perl, PHP und MySQL sind von Vorteil

Die Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften mit Sitz in der Münchner Residenz ist eine der ältesten und größten deutschen Wissenschaftsakademien. Als Gelehrtengesellschaft und Forschungseinrichtung widmet sie sich vorwiegend der Grundlagenforschung sowohl im geistes- als auch im naturwissenschaftlichen Fächerspektrum mit einem Schwerpunkt auf langfristigen, größeren Forschungsunternehmungen, wie dem Thesaurus linguae Latinae. Zu ihren Einrichtungen gehören überdies das Leibniz-Rechenzentrum und das Walther-Meißner-Institut für Tieftemperaturforschung.

Wir erwarten:

  • sehr gute allgemeine PC- und MS-Office-Kenntnisse
  • Grundkenntnisse von Netzwerkbetriebssystemen
  • Teamfähigkeit

Tätigkeitsprofil:

  • Sozialversicherte Tätigkeit auf Stundenbasis
  • Enge Abstimmung mit dem Leibniz-Rechenzentrum
  • Umfang 20 bis 40 Wochenstunden je nach Verfügbarkeit
  • Dauer voraussichtlich bis Ende August 2011
